Why Your Child Should Not Take a Vacation From LearningApril 30th, 2015
Ah, summer time. No schedules. Sleeping in. Taking it easy.
That’s what many of us dream about when it comes to summer, and while summer is meant to be a time to ease back, there are important reasons why you shouldn’t let your kids take a vacation from learning.
Some educators call this the “summer slide”, the time when children’s minds “go idle”. According to a report by the National Summer Learning Association, “A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year. It’s common for teachers to spend at least one month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month that could have been spent on teaching new information and skills.”
Stacy Costa, founder of School Answers Academic Success Center says our current philosophy of a school year in many parts of the country contributes to the "slide". "Students, especially at a young age, should be taught to be lifelong learners. They should be taught to love learning and to be constant learners. Taking two months or so 'off' from learning sometimes gives them the impression that learning is negative, whereas it should always be presented in the positive."
School Answers wants to make sure your child stays “Summer Smart” by offering several programs to keep your child learning. Our Summer Smart Math and Language Arts program is offered at our Colts Neck facility to children in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Our New Jersey certified teachers help your child to complete his summer packet, keep learning skills sharp as well as make sure he is prepared for the upcoming school year.
We also offer more than 100 different online courses powered by International Connections Academy (iNaCa).
Kindergarten through 8th grade students can learn new technology skills while reinforcing reading, language arts and math skills. High School students can take original course credits, make up for credits lost and even sign up for NCAA eligible courses with the flexibility families long for in the summer.
School Answers lets students take advantage of a Blended Learning atmosphere combining online learning and personal help from our experienced educators.
"At School Answers we have a saying that we make smart kids smarter. We say that because we believe all kids are smart and they are. Every student that walks in our door is smart, and while some have some gaps in their learning, and some excel in other areas, they all amaze us everyday with their knowledge base and their 'smarts'," says Costa.
